The University of Nebraska at Omaha, or UNO for short, is a public space grant university in Omaha, which is the county seat of Douglas County and the largest city in the US state of Nebraska, having a population estimated at a number of more than 450 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census, fact which also makes it the 40th largest city in the nation.
The University of Nebraska Omaha was established in 1908, and it currently is the 3rd largest institution of higher learning in the state, after Metropolitan Community College and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The university's current name was adopted in 1968, when it became part of the University of Nebraska system.
Today, the university has an enrollment of approximately 15 000 students, to whom it offers various educational programs in numerous fields of study, for the quality education offered, the institution having an excellent reputation, being highly ranked by significant publications such as Princeton Review and U.S News, which placed UNO on its list of ''Best Midwestern College 2007'', ranking it as a Tier 1 school.
UNO's athletic teams are known as the UNO Mavericks, who compete in NCAA Division II, in 14 sports for men and women, including in women's softball, in which they won the AIAW national championship, in 1975, and wrestling, in which they won five NCAA II national championships.
The distinctive colors of the Mavericks are crimson and black and their mascot is Durango.
Among UNO's noteworthy alumni, there are: actor Peter Fonda, US Senator Chuck Hagel, United States Army General James J. Lindsay, astronomer and Chief Scientist of Australia Penny Sackett, Chairman and President of Union Pacific Railroad James R. Young, NHL goalie Dan Ellis and Emmy Award-winning television meteorologist Dick Fletcher, among few others.
